Holding up at Hotel Bondi feels wonderfully lonely. Perhaps this iconic hotel is Sydney's answer to the Chateau Marmont. The place seems pretty much empty and from its wide old balconies you can take in the beach views, a little like Sofia Coppola's Johnny Marco.
Even in the middle of winter, Sydney is full of summer time charm. And being tucked away in an ancient hotel is the perfect makeshift studio. The feeling of being in transition from one place to another gives an urgency to the way I draw. Its a bit like the way tourists and local surfers alike are franticly running all over this famous beach, trying to make the most of their time here.
